Welcome to the sixth instalment of our weekly “Saturday Shorts” series, in which we’ll be sharing five NFF-screened shorts each week for you to enjoy for free from the comfort of your own home.
This week we’re back with another five handpicked shorts from previous festivals. From a fabulous LGBTQ+ coming-of-age story about a boy with ambitions of becoming a successful drag queen, to a powerful animation highlighting the need for change in the way we treat those with illnesses and disabilities in the UK, we really hope you love this week’s selection as much as we do!
SEQUINS
SCREENED AT NFF2019 | BRITISH LGBTQ+ SHORT
DIR: Michael Beddoes
Description: Paul Bigsby, 17, wakes up early every morning to practice his somewhat haphazard drag act. A chance encounter with jaded Blackpool queen Mimi Le Purr, sets him on a collision course with his parents, bullies and the school talent show. Sequins is a coming-of-age story about a teenage boy living in St Annes-on-Sea in the late 90s with an ambition to become a successful drag queen, inspired by the cabaret queens at The Sequin Club in Blackpool.

The Fox
SCREENED AT NFF2017 | BRITISH SHORT FILM
DIR: HENRY SCRIVEN
Description: A thief breaks into a home in West London amidst a recent string of burglaries targeting mostly affluent, wealthy homes, leaving a distinct signature marking his handiwork. But one home’s current occupant forces the invader to confront the limits of his criminality in an exchange of wits and blows that upends the dynamic between thief and victim.
Stitch
SCREENED AT NFF2019 | STUDENT SHORT FILM
DIR: SIOBHAN SMITH
Description: Harry attends an interview, full of optimism that he will walk out with the financial benefits that enable to him to live a sustainable life. But the cold bureaucracy, and the unsympathetic individuals behind it, prove impossible to navigate. To escape his horrific situation, Harry finds himself retreating into his imagination – a softer world, full of wool and crochet. Stitch is an animated short film which highlights the need for change in the way we treat those with illnesses and disabilities in the UK.

DIR: Devon Avery
Description: Every time the beautiful Regina rejects his advances, James pushes a red button and tries again, all the while unaware of the reality and consequences of his actions.
Finding Lines
SCREENED AT NFF2019 | One Minute Movie
DIR: Mattias Larson
Description: Finding Lines is an experimental micro-documentary, which sheds light on the many geometrical patterns that make cities around the world run smoothly. A skateboarder explores the man-made shapes he comes across as he weaves his way through a metropolis, appreciating the intricacies of the right-angled landscape he finds himself in.
